Maltby Main Football Club
Main were looking to build on their home win over Shirebrook Town when they travelled to Arnold Town, the home team boasting two ex-professionals, Chris Freestone and Martin Carruthers, in their starting fourteen.
Main keeper Jamie Bailey pulled off a great save to deny Liam Southern in the first minute, palming the ball away from danger.
Town went close in the ninth minute when Freestone squared the ball to Carl Spencer but his shot was well saved by the legs of Bailey and out for a corner.
Arnold took the lead from the resulting corner when Tommy Hannigan headed in from close range and the home side thought they had doubled their lead in the twentieth minute when Freestone sidefooted in after Bailey had  palmed out Nick Hall’s long range strike, but the linesman ruled the goal out for offside.
Main went close to pulling level when skipper Danny Reilly headed just wide of the back post from Neil Longhurst’s cross in the twenty first minute.
On the half hour mark Rob Branagan raced onto Josh Thornton’s weak back pass, rounded Lee Broster and tried rolling the ball square to Longhurst but Hannigan smashed the ball clear.
The home side doubled their lead in the thirty first minute when Luke Smithson controlled Spencer’s low ball and rolled it into the path of Freestone who sidefooted into the far corner of the Main goal.
Four minutes later Smithson made it three when he smashed the loose ball home from the edge of the box following Reilly’s tackle on Freestone.
Main were forced to make a substitution in the forty second minute with youngster Tommy Salt coming on for the injured Chris Dickman.
Broster palmed away Longhurst’s low shot as he raced in on goal in the forty fifth minute.
Bailey pulled of a great save to deny Spencer in the forty seventh minute, palming away the winger’s curling shot from the twenty yards.
On the hour mark Branagan went inches away from pulling a goal back for Main when he raced onto Adam Shepherd’s through ball but his shot hit the side netting.
Main were stunned in the sixty fourth minute when Simon Hickey was shown a yellow card then a red for a deliberate trip on Joe Naylor. The Main player and dugout were furious claiming Hickey had not been shown a first yellow card.
Spencer finished the rout in the seventy sixth minute when he fired high into the top corner of the Main goal from thirty yards out.
Shepherd went close for Main in second half injury time when he fired just wide of the post following Rob Hayes’ square ball.
