Maltby Main Football Club
Main made the long journey to Stamford to take on Blackstones in the extra preliminary round of the FA cup and earned a replay after a one-one draw.
With Steve Adams away on holiday, managerial duties were taken on by Martin Hawley and four changes were made to the starting line up from the previous match at Selby. Ben Redfearn, Paul Lavender, Adam Shepherd and Ashley Hunter all started with James Ellis and John Thompson added to the bench.
Both sides shared the early chances with ‘Stones winger Andy Ellis shooting wide and Main striker Ryan Smyth shooting over from the edge of the box.
Both ‘keepers were brought into early action. Main’s Jamie Bailey had to punch out Mark Cox’s left wing cross and ‘Stones Mike Duggan had to race from his line to prvent Smyth from getting on the end of Matt Wragg’s through ball.
The game swung from end to end with Redfearn having a shot blocked and Matt Wragg shooting wide from eight yards for Main. Tom Davies shot wide and Robbie Pearce headed over after Steve Burns had flicked on Mark Cox’s long throw for the home side.
In the 23rd minute, ‘Stones took the lead when David Burton-Jones headed past Bailey from eight yards following Pearce’s cross from the right.
The home side finished the half strongly and Bailey made two quality saves to deny Pearce and Matthew Cox.
Straight after the break, ‘Stones had chances to increase their lead. Elton Holmes shot wide from the edge of the box and Matthew Cox wasted a glorious chance by shooting over from eight yards.
For Main, Redfearn beat three defenders but his low shot was easily saved by ‘Stones ‘keeper Duggan.
Then. Bailey saved a low shot from Pearce before Redfearn tried his luck from 25 yards, producing a good stop from Duggan.
With 10 minutes left, Main went close to an equaliser when Smyth latched onto Shepherd’s through ball but his shot from the edge of the box came back off the crossbar.
Six minutes later, Main pulled level when the home ‘keeper fouled Jon Wragg inside the box and Chris Dickman earned Main a replay by shooting high into the net past Duggan for his second goal from the spot in as many matches.
