Maltby Main Football Club
Main, smarting after the midweek defeat to lowly Handsworth, travelled to local rivals Hallam and altered a run of four straight defeats by picking up a well earned point.
The game could have been a lot different though, with Main missing several chances to kill the game off.
Steve Adams gave new centre back Gary Hibbert, signed from Dinnington Town, his debut for Main.
The home side took an early lead when, in omly the second minute, Richard Patterson fired a low volley through a crowd of players inside the Main penalty area, Jamie Bailey managed to tip the ball onto the post but the ball rolled along the goal line and in at the far post.
Four minutes later Leon Wainman worked his way into a good position but he flashed his shot across the face of the Main goal before Rob Ward burst through the Main defence in the seventh minute but skipper Paul Staniforth was on hand to slide in to win the ball and Hibbert cleared the danger.
Main’s first real chance came in  the eleventh  minute when John Beggs curled in a peach of a corner that Hibbert rose to meet but the ball was cleared off the line by Ward then headed wide by Mellon.
From the resulting corner, Hibbertt had another header blocked and Danny Reilly fired the rebound wide.
In the twenty fourth minute Bailey pulled off a great point blank save to deny Ward from close range as he looked set to score.
On the half hour mark Chris Wood broke free of the Hallam defence and lifted the ball over Martin Kearney but the ball went the wrong side of the crossbar.
Main drew level in the thirty second minute when Woods went on a great solo run, racing down the wing. The former Hallam striker cut inside and fired a shot in from a tight angle that flew into the far corner leaving Kearney helpless.
Three minutes later Danny Reilly pulled off a goal saving challenge on Wainman as he looked set to get in on goal and the home side had the ball in the net in the thirty fifth minute when Ward dived in to challenge for the ball with Bailly, the ball cannoning off Ward and into the net. With the Main keeper down injured,  the referee disallowed the goal for the foul on Bailey.
Main started the second half better than they did the first with Beggs inches away from heading them in front following great build up play from Staniforth, Rob Branagan and David Shepherd.
Main were awarded an indirect free kick inside the Hallam penalty area for a high foot from Phil Reynolds on Shepherd and Staniforth lined the ball up but it was Lee Mellon who struck the ball against the wall. Staniforth rattled a low volley in from the rebound that Kearney was forced to save down low.
On the hour mark James Tevendale sprung the offside trap and raced in on goal, Bailey came out to challenge and won the ball with Reilly thumping the ball clear.
Main were twice denied in the sixty sixth minute, by the crossbar from Simon Hickey’s powerful strike following Branagan’s run and cut back and, from the rebound, Shepherd had his low shot palmed round the post by Kearney.
With twenty minutes remaining in the match Ward raced onto Dave Knaggs’ ball forward and fired a powerful shot that Bailey superbly tipped over the bar for a corner.
Four minutes later Wood found himself clear on goal but his shot bounced inches wide under pressure from Knaggs and Kearney.
Kearney was forced to palm Wood’s curling shot away for a corner in the seventy sixth minute following Branagan’s run and square ball.
A minute later Kearney was called upon to save down low from Wood’s shot on the turn before, with three minutes remaining, Shepherd fired a side foot volley inches wide of the post following Branagan’s cross from the wing.
Main were pleased with a point but thoughts were that they deserved all three.
