Maltby Main Football Club
Main went into their opening league encounter with a fresh new look, with several changes to the team including new manager Steve Adams and several new faces in the Main squad.
The home side where the first to show with Chris Murdock firing high and wide from an acute angle in only the second minute.
Main’s first chance fell to Rob Branagan in the fifth minute when he latched onto Chris Dickman’s through ball having beaten home skipper Mike Allsop but his shot went wide of the goal.
New Main keeper Jamie Bailey was called into action in the twelfth minute when he threw himself onto the ball as Channon North was poised to sidefoot the ball home.
Branagan then forced Ross Whalin into a good save in the fourteenth minute, the home ‘keeper tipping the ball over the bar at full stretch following Scott Somerville’s ball to John Beggs and then his through ball.
Dickman dispossessed Paul Gamble in the middle of the park and sent Somerville through on goal but Allsop was able to get back to clear for a corner. Beggs floated corner was cleared by Gamble.
Main had two great chances to take the lead.
In the twenty first minute when Somerville raced down the wing, cut inside and fired in a low cross which Greg Mason latched onto but his strike was beaten away by Whalin only to the feet of Branagan but his shot was also saved by Whalin.
A minute later Somerville profited from a weak back header from Allsop following Dave Shepherd’s long ball but his touch was too heavy and Whalin collected the ball.
Main had Sean Lee to thank for them not being behind in the twenty fifth minute when was in the right place     
to block Adam Newton’s strike out for a corner with the Main goal empty.
From the resulting corner the home side took the lead when Allsop rose and headed in at the back post.
Somerville was sent clear through by Mike Baker in the thirty fifth minute but he was again unable to control the ball.
The home side doubled their lead in the forty second minute when Rowan Hines fired a long range shot crashing into the back of the Main goal.
United side started the second half as they finished the first - with a goal.
Alex Steadman side-footed over Bailey as he came out to narrow the angle only eighty six seconds after the restart.
In the fifty third minute Lee fired a fierce shot narrowly wide of the home goal with Whalin scrambling to his right.
With twenty minutes left in the game United nearly made it four when Bailey palmed out Steadman’s strike and Shepherd was forced to clear Nathan Parker’s effort off the line.
In the eighty first minute Main sub Danny White fired a shot wide of the goal with several players in better positions before, a minute later, John Beggs raced onto Somerville’s through ball but his shot went wide of the home goal.
In second half injury time Gamble sent Steadman through but Bailey flung himself bravely at his feet to win the ball.
