Maltby Main Football Club
Main’s dreams of an FA cup run were cruelly smashed by a late winner for League One side Bottesford Town after a dramatic second half comeback from the visitors.
Main manager Steve Adams had several players out with injury but he was only forced into one change after last week’s home win over Nostell with Danny White into the starting line-up in place of Matt Wragg. Carl Thornton, Ben Walker and Dave Shepherd started on the bench.
With the local ITV cameras focused on Muglet Lane, referee Mark Jones got the game underway with Main kicking from right to left up the slope.
Main were the first to show with Rob Branagan forcing Paul Metcalfe into a save low down from a powerful header.
Maltby ‘keeper Dave Hattersley was forced to palm away Steve Harrop’s freekick from the edge of the area and Danny White cleared the danger before John Baross fired high over the home bar from twenty yards after a great bit of pressure from the visitors.
However, Main took the lead in the twenty first minute when Branagan smashed the ball into the right side of the goal following Danny Patterson’s ball to Mick Baker and his defence splitting through ball.
Main doubled their lead in the six minutes  later when Greg Mason controlled Danny Reilly’s ball forward and rocketed the ball over Metcalfe and into the top corner.
Mason could have had his second a minute later but his shot was tipped narrowly over the bar following Chris Dickman’s ball forward.
Branagan forced Metcalfe to tip his header out for a corner in the thirty fifth minute following skipper Paul Staniforth’s curling freekick and, a minute before half time, Branagan was sent through on goal but his chip was easily caught by Metcalfe.
In first half injury time Branagan raced down the wing and looped a cross into the area. Mason latched onto the ball but his header flew
over the bar as Main went into the break with a 2-0 lead and the next round beckoning.
In the fifty seventh minute Mason played the ball through for Branagan who rounded Metcalfe but he was unable to get the ball out of his feet and Metcalfe collected his shot.
The visitors  pulled a goal back in the fifty eighth minute when Chris Ridley benefitted from a fumbled back pass from Sean Lee and sidefooted the ball into the goal and Town were level in the 10 minutes later when Ridley slotted the ball under Hattersley after Scott McDonald had cleared the ball straight to the winger’s feet.
A minute later the comeback was complete when Phil Jackman side footed into an empty net after Hattersley had fumbled Metcalfe’s long kick.
Hattersley was then sent off for a deliberate hand ball outside of his penalty area and Main skipper, Paul Staniforth donned the keeper’s jersey and gloves with Main down to ten men.
From the resulting free kick Harrop fired the ball straight at the Maltby defensive wall.
Town could have sealed the result in the eighty sixth minute when Baross was sent clear through on goal but his shot flew well wide of the Main goal.
A minute from time Mason looked to have taken the match to a replay when he chipped Metcalfe from a tight angle twenty yards from goal but there was a final twist in the tale when Jackman raced down the wing and lofted the ball into the area where it was deflected past Staniforth and into the goal by Scott McDonald.
