Before kick off Referee Duncan Street consulted with his assistants Gareth Mellor and Colin Whittaker whether to allow the game to be played because of lingering thick fog at Muglet Lane.
With resrevations, Mr Street allowed the game to be played and it paid off for Main with them dominating the struggling Shirebrook team.
The fog never lifted but Main started the brighter. In only the second minute, with Chris Wood racing onto skipper Paul Staniforth’s cross, his shot was deflected wide of the goal for a corner by Town ‘keeper Joel Armstrong.
Town had a good chance to take the lead in the eighth minute when Simon Johnson raced down the wing, his cross was cleared by Staniforth but only as far as Joe Naylor whose shot was deflected behind by his own player but Mr Street gave a corner.
Three minutes later Staniforth was inches away from putting Main ahead when his free-kick curled just wide of the post.
Armstrong was lucky to not be left red faced when, in the thirteenth minute, Staniforth curled another free-kick over the wall. The ball looked to have gone under the visiting ‘keeper but he managed to catch the ball between his legs.
Main were denied by a good stop from Armstrong in the twenty second minute when Wood raced down the wing and lifted the ball into the area. Scott Somerville rose at the back post to head goalwards but the Town keeper palmed  the ball away.
Town were awarded a penalty in the twenty eighth minute when Johnson was sent tumbling by Main ‘keeper Jamie Bailey. Johnson dusted himself down but his spot kick was well saved by Bailey diving to his left.
Main took the lead in the thirty third minute when Matt Wragg’s shot hit the post and rolled in after great build up play involving Jon Wragg and Wood.
The lead was doubled on the stroke of half time when centre back Gary Hibbert volleyed home John Beggs’s corner from inside the penalty area .
The second half saw Main go three - nil up 6 minutes after the restart with Wood heading in at the backpost following Somerville’s free kick forward.
Town pulled a goal back two minutes later when Callum Wilkinson raced down the wing and played the ball inside to Johnson whose low shot hit Bailey’s foot but still rolled into the far corner.
On the hour mark Town were awarded a bizarre penalty with the ball up field. Hibbert looked to have pushed Wilkinson over in the box and the linesman signalled to the referee who gave the penalty. Nathan Watson stepped up and sent Bailey the wrong way to put Town a goal closer to being level.
In the sixty fifth minute Wood got a cross in from the bye line and Somerville crashed his side footed volley against the post.
Main thought they had scored their fourth when Matt Wragg had his header cleared off the line. Main thought the ball had crossed the line but the linesman waved away the appeals in the fog.
With a quarter of an hour remaining in the game Beggs lifted the ball to the back post were Wood volleyed goalwards and Matt Wragg slid in to score on the line and seal the win for Main.
