Maltby Main Football Club
Main progressed to the preliminary round of the FA Cup but it took a thrilling penalty shootout that Main won four-three to separate the sides after 120 minutes had failed to produce a goal.
Main had Tom Jones back in defence with John Thompson stepping up from the bench and Andy Wood recalled to the squad as substitute.
As in the first tie, ‘Stones started strongly following their long trip up from Stamford in Lincolnshire.
Defender Luke Hunnings had a header saved by Main ‘keeper Jamie Bailey following Luke Avis’ free kick into the box and Avis had a shot saved after Andy Ellis’ ball forward was only half cleared.
Bailey had to punch out Avis’ free kick and, from the corner, Steve Burns shot well wide.
In the 16th minute, ‘Stones ‘keeper Mike Duggan had  to punch away Scott Mellon’s in-swinging corner and then saved Ryan Smyth’s shot from the edge of the box from Paul Lavender’s cross from the right.
Main finished the half on top with Ben Redfearn shooting wide from 25 yards, Lavender shooting wide and Smyth having a shot deflected for a corner.
A minute after the break, Redfearn set up Adam Shepherd and his shot from inside the box went inches wide before Main substitute Ashley Hunter had a 52nd minute goalbound shot blocked after Thompson’s long throw into the box was only half cleared.
Main midfielder Chris Dickman tried his luck with a long effort that flew just over the bar and Redfearn shot just wide after latching on to Hunter’s brilliant crossfield ball.
With 15 minutes remaining, Bailey produced a top class save by tipping Avis’ free kick over the bar.
Three minutes later, Hunnings headed over from Avis’ free kick before Smyth had an 87th minute shot blocked.
In the first period of extra time, ‘Stones had the pick of the early chances with Ellis shooting wide, Avis having a shot saved and Elton Holmes forcing Bailey into a good save with a shot from the edge of the box.
In the 102nd minute,Smyth curled a shot just over and Redfearn shot straight at Duggan with a free kick.
In the second period, Hunter had a shot in the box blocked.
Then, Bailey made another brilliant stop by keeping out a shot from Holmes before the last action of the match saw Holmes shoot straight at Bailey with a free kick from the edge of the box and Smyth shoot wide from Hunter’s ball from the right.
After 120 goalless minutes it was down to the deciding penalty shootout. Main went first with Wood scoring and David Burton-Jones scoring for ‘Stones. Jon Wragg stepped up for Main but Duggan kept out his spot kick and Holmes scored to put ‘Stones in front, Dickman scored to equal things up but Matt Cox beat Bailey to put Stones back in front. Redfearn scored for Main, then Mark Cox hit his spot kick high over the bar and it was down to the last two penalties.
Young Main striker Ryan Smyth made no mistake to put Main in front and up stepped ‘Stones substitute Nathan Woodward but Bailey made a brilliant save diving to his left to keep out the spot kick and put Main into the next round 4-3.
