Maltby Main Football Club
Main halted a run of defeats with a three-one victory against bottom of the table Brodsworth Welfare.
Despite their lowly league position,Welfare set the early pace when, in the third minute, Matt Bedford took advantage of Main defender James Radford’s hesitancy in the box but his shot was well off-target.
Two minutes later Welfare were close to taking the lead when striker Brendan Thompson’s thirty yard shot hit the angle of the bar and post with Main ‘keeper Jamie Bailey well beaten.
Then, at the other end, Greg Mason’s header from Dave Shepherd’s free kick into the box hit the outside of the visitors’ upright.
After sixteen minutes, Main took the lead with a well worked goal. Assistant player-manager Lee Mellon started the move with a high ball into the box that Rob Branagan headed down into the path of Mason, whose lay off was met by Chris Dickman and his left foot shot flew high into the net past Welfare ‘keeper Martin Spavin.
Straight after the goal, Mason shot over from inside the box and Mellon headed over from Dave Shepherd’s cross from the left.
Welfare defender Lee Grinhaff hit a free kick well over the Main bar and Mellon had another headed effort saved by Spavin following Radford’s cross from the left.
With ten first half minutes left, Dave Carlin had a twentyfive yard free kick easily saved by Bailey and Jamie Cooke shot wide as Welfare looked for an opening.
Dave Shepherd had a shot deflected for a corner just before Main added a second in the thirty eighth minute.
Branagan’s shot was deflected for a corner and when Branagan flicked on Dave Shepherd’s near post flag-kick, Mason headed in from close range.
Minutes before the break, Main were awarded a penalty when Matt Brown was adjudged to have fouled Mason inside the box and, from the spot, Mellon smashed the ball past Spavin.
In the second half, Mellon was in the thick of the action for Main with four good chances, the best being in the sixty fifth minute, shooting just wide from inside the Welfare box from a Jon Wragg cross from the right.
In the seventy second minute, Carlin wasted a free kick from a good position by shooting well wide of the Main goal before Main substitute Scott Whittington hit a eightieth minute shot high over the bar from inside the box.
In the last minute Welfare ruined Bailey’s clean sheet when Paul Haigh beat the offside trap and slotted the ball past the Main ‘keeper  from the edge of the box.
Then, Whittington blasted high over from inside the box after Mason’s shot had been pushed out by Spavin.
