Maltby Main Football Club
Main came out on top in a nine goal thriller at Muglet Lane to record their first ‘double’ of the new season.
All at the club are in high spirits after two away wins in three days had brought a total of seven goals and only conceding three but Main went into the game making four changes to the side that beat Brodsworth on bank holiday Monday, Dave Shepherd replacing Paul Staniforth, John Beggs in for Mike Baker, Scott Somerville returning from injury to replace Rob Branagan and Simon Hickey, a new signing from Belper Town, came in on the bench.
Main fired into their opponents in the second minute when Chris Dickman played the ball forward to Matt Wragg who then played the ball wide to John Beggs. Beggs sent in a low cross, Greg Mason controlled the ball at the back post but his shot was tipped onto the cross bar and out for a corner by United ‘keeper, Darrell Crowley.
A minute later Mason crossed the ball into the area from the left wing and Somerville vollied straight at the back post, the ball going out for a throw in.
Mason fired a shot just over the bar in the tenth minute as Main had the visitors on the ropes and, a minute later, Chris Dickman sent Matt Wragg clear through on goal. The Maltby striker rounded Crowley and side footed into the empty net to give Main the lead.
Two minutes later Somerville saw his shot tipped round the post by Crowley following Beggs’s cross.
The visitors first real chance came in the seventeenth minute when Ian Green curled in a free kick from wide on the right but Dave Hattersley was on hand to easily save the danger.
Main doubled their lead in the twenty fourth minute when Arron Oddy sliced Danny Patterson’s corner to Crowley but he only managed to palm the ball to Somerville’s feet and the Main striker smashed the ball into the far corner for his first goal of the new campaign.
Somerville had his second of the game and Main’s third when he controlled Mason’s ball forward, turned towards goal and his shot hit James Gorman and deflected over Crowley and into the net.
The visitors pulled a goal back on the half hour mark when Chris Wood controlled Oddy’s throw in and worked his way to the bye-line and fired his shot through the legs of Hattersley and into the far
corner of the goal from a very tight angle.
Five minutes from time Danny Patterson beat the offside trap and raced in on goal but his shot was superbly palmed away one handed by Crowley but Matt Wragg restored Main’s three goal lead when he benefited from Gary Birchall’s weak clearance following Beggs’s cross and the big Main striker coolly side footed into the empty goal to send Main into the interval with a comfortable 4-1 lead
The second half started as did the first with Main straight on the offensive.
Mason fired a shot past Crowley and into the Eccleshill goal after only six minutes.
Wood pulled another goal back for the visitors in the fifty seventh minute when he fired a shot into the far corner of Hattersley’s goal and Wood sealed his hat trick in the sixtieth minute when he pounced on a rebound and smashed the ball into the far corner following Darren Fletcher’s powerful strike hitting the cross bar.
Six minutes later Somerville could have had his hat trick but he was unable to divert Matt Wragg’s cross goalwards after the tall  Main striker had beaten the offside trap.
Twenty minutes from time Somerville switched the ball wide to Beggs, who vollied the ball goalwards. Matt Wragg managed to get his head to the ball but the ball hit the inside of the post and into the arms of Crowley.
Patterson raced onto Mason’s through ball but his eightieth minute shot was saved well by the legs of Crowley.
Two of the Main substitutes combined in the eighty third minute when Hickey switched the ball to Danny White. White cut inside and fired in a powerful shot that Crowley was forced to tip over the bar.
The rout was sealed in the eighty seventh minute when Hickey fired the ball in from a tight angle for a debut goal following Somerville’s ball wide to the midfielder’s feet.
Crowley was still being tested in second half injury time when Somerville curled a free kick round the wall and the visiting ‘keeper was forced to tip the ball over the bar.
