Main were looking for revenge  for their 2-1 League cup exit to Eccleshill when the two side met for the first Friday night League game to be played at Muglet Lane.
Main made one change to their derby winning side with skipper Chris Piperithis out with a knee injury, James Mitchell back in the starting line-up as replacement.
Main were the first to show when, on twelve minutes, Ash Longstaff raced down the wing and fired in a low cross but the referee awarded United a free kick for Luke Fletcher’s foul on Luke Ruff.
The United defence were struggling to withstand the pressure from Main, Devan Warner slicing Nicky Darker’s long throw straight back to him but Darker’s cross was too strong and it went out for a goal kick.
Gary Birchall was booked for a dangerous foul on Darker in the seveteenth minute and Main took a deserved lead from Paul Straniforth’s curling free-kick, Longstaff superbly volleying home at the far post.
It took the visitors twenty three minutes before they managed their first real effort on goal, Ross Hayward runnig down the wing and crossing the ball to the far post. Luke Richardson rose but his header was easily dealt with by Liam Richardson in the Main goal. Richardson then fired the ball down field to Longstaff whose shot went wide of the goal.
In the twenty sixth minute Andy Hirst played the ball forward to Scott Somerville who crossed into the area and Darker rose but Carl Zaborowski saved his header.
On the half hour mark Hirst broke through Richardson’s challenge and raced in on goal but the legs of Zaborowski saved his shot and Richardson cleared the danger behind his own goal.
Two minutes later Longstaff went close to doubling Main’s lead when he volleyed just over the bar from close range following Fletcher’s cross into the six yard box.
Main were forced to make a change in the fortieth minute when the unfortunate Mitchell was stretched off with suspected ankle ligament damage, Scott Riley replacing him. Fortunately the injury proved to be just a severe sprain.
A minute from time Hirst raced down the wing and lifted the ball into the area for Longstaff to head but Zaborowski saved on his line as the home
side went into the half time break with only one goal to show for their first half dominance.
Main came out for the second half has strongly as they finished the first.
Somerville beat two defenders but his through ball was too strong for Longstaff and Somerville was unlucky not to put Main two up in the fifty fifth minute when he connected with Darker’s long throw but sliced the ball into the arms of Zaborowski.
On the hour mark Fletcher went on a great run, beating two players, but he slipped under pressure, still managing to get a cross in while on the floor, but Zaborowski caught and cleared the danger.
A minute later Andy Philp was lucky not to see red when he kicked Staniforth in the head but the referee showed him a yellow card.
United almost pulled level in the sixty sixth minute but Andy Howland’s shot was cleared off the line by Hurst.
Main went two up in the seventy second minute when Somerville played the ball to Riley who dinked a cross into the area where Hirst flung himself full length to head the ball into the far corner for the second spectacular goal of the evening.
Main almost had another in the seventy sixth minute when Hurst beat three players and lifted the ball into the area but Zaborowski snatched the ball from Longstaff’s head.
Main showed no signs of settling for two and, in the seventy eighth minute, Fletcher fired a long range shot just over the bar but United then had Main on the back foot when Paul Barker raced into the area but his eighty sixth minute shot was pushed behind by Richardson. From the resulting corner Waite fired the ball into the far corner of the goal with Richardson getting his fingertips to the ball but unable to keep it out to set up a tense last few minutes but Main manager Sean Kay still had time to give run outs to both Jovan Maric and Liam Kay with two minutes remaining, the Main subs replacing Chris Dickman and Scott Somerville.

Main: Liam Richardson, Mark Coggin, Paul Staniforth, Andy Hirst, James Mitchell (Scott Riley 40), Danny Mullooley, Chris Dickman (Liam Kay 88), Nicky Darker, Scott Somerville (Jovan Maric 88), Ashley Longstaff, Luke Fletcher.
