Maltby Main Football Club
Main were looking to put their league cup defeat to Lincoln Moorlands Railway behind them when they entertained Hall Road Rangers at Muglet Lane.
Before the game their was a two minute silence as a mark of respect to Kyle Grant, son of former Main assistant manager Wayne Grant.
Main set about the visitors early on when skipper Paul Staniforth launched the ball forward for Rob Branagan. Main’s top scorer raced onto the ball but Mike Burley came and cleared the ball in the ninth minute.
Main took the lead in fourteenth minute when Branagan raced onto Scott Somerville’s through ball, beat two defenders and slotted the ball under Burley and into the back of the net.
The main talking point in the game came on 20 minutes. Matt Griffin challenged Paul Palmer in the middle of the park and won the ball. Palmer went down holding his ankle and the referee showed Griffin a straight red card, a really harsh decision that incensed the whole Main team and supporters.
Four minutes later Staniforth was inches away from doubling the home lead when his curling shot flew just wide of the post before, on the half hour mark, Simon Hickey was shown a yellow card for a 50/50 challenge on Burley, another really harsh decision from the ref.
Branagan was denied in the thirty fourth minute when he raced onto Somerville’s through ball but his shot hit the legs of Burley.
Five minutes from half time Staniforth played the ball forward, Rangers’ Steve Graham headed the ball back, but it was weak and Branagan pounced but his chip landed wide of the post.
Rangers first real attempt in the game saw them level in the forty eighth minute when Palmer curled the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area following Jamie Barnwell’s ball forward.
John Beggs was unlucky not to have given Main the lead again in the fifty second minute when Staniforth switched the ball to him and he raced to the edge of the box and curled in a shot that flew inches wide of the far post.
Main keeper Jamie Bailey pulled a great point blank save to deny Dave Ingram from close range in the fifty sixth minute before Main were forced to make a substitution in the minute when Jon Wragg was taken off with a hamstring injury, James Ellis replaced him.
Fifteen minutes from time Ingram should have done better after shooting well wide from inside the Main area following Adam Walker’s cross from the left but Branagan almost put Main back in the lead in the eightith minute when he diverted Ryan Tate’s drilled cross but the ball landed the wrong side of the post with Burley struggling to get across his goal.
Main were still trying their best to get all three points at the death when, two minutes from time, both Branagan and Tate had shots blocked.
