Maltby Main Football Club
Main were looking to put the previous Saturday’s 4-1 away defeat to Armthorpe behind them when they entertained local rivals Hallam at Muglet Lane.
Inspirational Main midfielder Lee Mellon was  ruled out with a knee injury debuts were handed to James Radford and Jamie Taylor at the centre of the defence. Hallam’s side contained many of last season’s Maltby squad who were lured away when former main manager, Wilf Race, took the reigns in the summer.
Main were the first to show when Jamie Taylor’s 6th minute deep free kick had Ben Brunt scrambling back to make sure the ball went over the bar. Jamie Bailey made a good save down to stop ex-Main striker Matt Wragg’s shot a minute later.
The visitors were unlucky not to go in front in the twenty third minute when Simon Asquith thundered a header against the bar from Ryan Tate’s corner before Phil King squandered a great chance for Hallam in the thirty fourth minute, firing high over the bar from the edge of the area.
A minute later Rob Brannagan flashed a long range strike just wide of the far post following Richard Tracey’s through ball before Main were awarded a free kick thirty yards from goal in the thirty seventh minute for a foul on Branagan by ex-Main skipper Gary Hibbert. Tracey fired the free kick at Brunt but he spilt the ball and Radford was on hand to head the ball into the empty net and give Main the lead. On the stroke of half time Tracey stepped up to take another free kick and this time it hit the wall and the rebound was sliced wide by Tracey.
Hallam came out fighting in the second half with Tate shooting just wide and Asquith going close with a header inside the first five minutes before Main were forced into making a substitution with Scott Whittington struggling with a knock being replaced by Paul Lavender.
The visitor’s pulled level in sixty fifth minute when Andy Wood raced down the wing and fired in a low cross that Tate smashed home off Bailey in the Main goal.
Hallam were in front a minute later when Hibbert’s long ball found Asquith free and he slotted the ball under Bailey and into the far corner.
With five minutes remaining in the game Lavender raced down the wing and fired in a cross that was blocked by Hibbert. Lavender looped the ball back into the area and the ball dropped to Branagan but he hooked his shot wide of the post.
In the nintieth minute Longhurst was unlucky not to have put Main level when his curling shot beat Brunt but hit the foot of the post and bounced away from danger following Dave Shepherd’s great run and pass but Main did pull level in the second minute of injury time when Brunt spilled Shepherd’s cross at the feet of Greg Mason who sidefooted in from close range.

Main: Jamie Bailey, Jamie Taylor, Dave Shepherd, Dave Gleeson (James Ellis 87), James Radford, Simon Hickey, Greg Mason, Richard Tracey (Neil Longhurst 72), Jonathan Wall, Rob Branagan, Scott Whittington (Paul Lavender 56).
