Maltby Main Football Club
Main were looking to build on their 6-1 home win against Winterton when they entertained Lincoln Moorlands Railway in the League Cup but again failed at the first hurdle in a cup competition for the fourth time this season.
Main were unlucky not to be ahead inside the first minute when John Beggs looped over a corner. The ball was partially cleared by Phil McGann in the Railway goal, only as far as Matt Griffin but he fired the ball over the bar from twelve yards out.
Railway went straight up the other end of the pitch and were awarded a penalty in the second minute when Danny White chopped down Adam Hewitt inside the area. Nick Robinson stepped up and sent Jamie Bailey the wrong to score the opener.
Robinson should have forced Bailey into a save in the thirteenth minute but he volleyed high over the bar from the edge of the area.
Then, Dave Shepherd beat the visitors’ offside trap on twenty minutes and raced in on goal but McGann easily saved his shot.
On the half hour mark John Beggs set off on a powerful run down the middle of the park and played Matt Wragg in on goal but Steve John managed to get a touch on the ball. The ball broke to Main top scorer Rob Branagan who hit his shot wide on the turn.
McGann pulled off a wonderful save in the forty third minute to deny Beggs, whose powerful shot was heading for the far corner of the goal as Railway went into the break a goal to the good.
Main pulled level in the fifty seventh minute when Shepherd played Branagan through on goal. The Main striker slotted the ball under McGann and into the back of the net for his 12th goal of the season in all competitions.
Main were unlucky not to go ahead in the sixty fourth minute when
Beggs’s free kick flew inches over the bar but, a minute later, Railway were back in the lead when Adam Hewitt headed home Josh Langtry’s cross from the bye line.
With twenty minutes remaining in the game Scott Somerville raced through the middle of the field and fired in a shot but McGann easily saved down low.
Main new boy Ryan Tate raced down the line and fired a powerful shot in the seventy third minute that was deflected behind for a corner. Somerville curled the corner into the area but McGann came out to claim the ball.
With eight minutes remaining in the game Hewitt raced down the wing and his shot looked to be curling under the bar but Bailey was on hand to palm the ball away and collect the loose ball.
Main had a great chance three minutes from the end when Tate raced down the wing and crossed from the left. Matt Wragg headed the ball goalwards and Branagan challenged McGann. The ball dropped to Somerville but he sliced the ball wide of the goal.
Railway almost had a third in the ninetieth minute when Langtry raced in on goal, but Bailey came out and blocked the shot with his legs on a night to forget for Main.

Main: Jamie Bailey, Jon Wragg (Ryan Tate 72), Paul Staniforth, Danny Reilly, Matt Griffin, John Beggs, Danny White (Scott Somerville 63), Simon Hickey (James Ellis 85), Matt Wragg, Rob Branagan, Dave Shepherd.
