Maltby Main Football Club
Main were looking to put their midweek 0-3 flop at home to Thackley behind them when they entertained league leaders Liversedge and made just 2 changes to Wednesday’s team with Maltby youngsters Danny Heald and Nicky Hancock making their Maltby debuts. Heald was deputising in goal for the suspended Dave Hattersley and Hancock was on the bench replacing Chris Dickman. Despite a very strong second half showing, Main were forced to settle for a draw as late chances went begging.
Main set about the top of the table side from the off when Danny Patterson raced down the wing and curled in a cross from the wing, Lee Ashforth was forced to come and catch the ball with Matt Wragg inches away from heading the ball in from close range.
‘Sedge skipper Daryll Leach was forced to block Scott McDonald’s shot from the edge of the area following John Wragg’s run and cross in the tenth minute.
The visitors’ first chance came in the thirteenth minute when Chris Hanney fired well wide of the Main goal from range.
Twenty five minutes from half time Scott Somerville flashed a volley inches wide of the goal following Simon Hickey’s ball to Mick Baker and his ball forward.
Heald made his first save in the twenty fifth minute when he caught Andy Shuttleworth’s cross following Luke Caulfield’s quick free kick.
On the half hour, Simon Hickey raced onto Bakers ball forward and fired a shot goalward that beat visiting ‘keeper Ashforth but the ball hit the side netting.
Heald then pulled off a world class save in the thirty first minute, tipping Luke Sherman’s powerful strike over the bar for a corner.
Ten minutes from halftime Ashforth was forced to put the ball out for a corner following Somerville’s strike, Patterson curled the ball in and Ashforth caught the ball while under pressure from John Beggs.
Two minutes later Shuttleworth fired in a low free kick which Heald saved well as, despite the end to end nature of the game, the score remained blank at the break.
The visitors took the lead in the forty ninth minute when Sherman lifted the ball over the out rushing Heald following Cauldfield’s long ball forward.
Main strived to get back in the game. Jonathan Wragg played the ball to brother Matt who held the ball up and laid the ball off for Baker but his shot from the egde of the area went over the bar.
Two minutes later Somerville played the ball wide to Dave Shepherd whose shot was palmed away by Ashforth before, in the 63rd minute, the visitors had the ball in the back of the net again when Mark Brady side footed into the empty goal following Sherman’s ball forward as Heald’s came out to challenge him but the effort was disallowed for offside.
Main deservedly equalised in the seventy eighth minute when Beggs volleyed superbly into the top corner following Somerville’s chip to the back post, the goal being an early contender for goal of the season.
Main were unlucky not to have taken the lead in the eighty first minute when Ashforth just managed to keep out Patterson’s low strike, the visiting ‘keeper palming the ball round the post for a corner.
From the resulting corner Beggs curled the ball into the area and Hickey fired a low shot through the crowd that hit Ashforth and went under his body but the ball spun back to Ashforth who collected the ball.
A minute from time Hickey was a fraction away from giving Main all three points when he lobbed Ashforth but his strike hit the cross bar and bounced the wrong side of the goal line.
