The first derby of the season ended all square after a fiercely contested one-one draw at Muglet Lane.
Main boss Steve Adams again made changes with Danny Reilly and Simon Megson back in defence and, back from Buxton for another spell, Chris Wood up front with Scott Somerville was added to the bench.
Chris Spooner had an early shot blocked for ‘Gate then, in the seventh minute, Main ‘keeper Jamie Bailey had to leave the field with a foot injury following a collision in the box with ‘Gate striker Mark Caine. Main were forced to reshuffle with James Ellis coming on and defender Dave Gleeson going between the sticks.
Spooner was again off target and Ryan Johnson headed wide from Jamie Jones’ cross into the box as ‘Gate looked for an opening.
Debutant striker, Wood went close in the thirty first minute for Main by forcing ‘Gate ‘keeper Danny Tollerfield into a good stop with a close range diving header from Rob Branagan’s low cross from the right.
Three minutes later, from another Branagan cross, Wood shot inches wide.
Spooner hit a shot on the turn just wide and. at the other end, Jonathan Wall went close with a shot from twelve yards going the wrong side of the post following Wood’s flick on.
Wood had the ball in the net in first half stoppage time but was flagged offside.
After a slow start to the second half, Main sub Somerville cashed in on a mix up in the ‘Gate defence when a back pass from David Kippax fell short of Tollerfield but
his shot from a tight angle inside the box was agonisingly wide of the far post.
On sixty eight minutes, Main took the lead when Branagan fired in at the back post after a Dave Shepherd cross from the right was only half cleared but the lead only lasted four minutes. Former Main defender Craig Mudd’s free kick caused problems in the Main box and former Main striker Luke Fletcher shot past stand-in ‘keeper Gleeson from eight yards.
A minute later Branagan wasted a good chance to restore the advantage, shooting inches wide before, with five minutes remaining, ‘Gate were awarded a penalty when Megson fouled Johnson in the box and was given a yellow card, much to the disgust of the Parkgate bench who made their feelings known during and after the match that, in their opinion, the card should been red.
Fletcher stepped up to the spot but his low shot to the right was beaten away by Gleeson to keep the scores level and the points shared.
