Maltby Main Football Club
Main were looking to continue their good run of form when they entertained League high flyers Pickering Town on a cold Wednesday night.
The visitors tested Main keeper Jamie Bailey as early as the third minute when he was forced to save down low from Liam Salt’s flicked shot.
Main striker Rob Branagan could have put Main in front in the seventh minute when he beat the offside trap and rounded Kevin Martin in the Town goal but his touch was too heavy and the ball rolled out for a goal kick.
On the quarter of an hour mark, Salt wasted a great chance to put the visitors in front but his overhead kick flew high over the bar following a goalmouth scramble where Danny Gray had his shot blocked off the line by John Drennan.
Main were forced to make a substitution in the ninteenth minute when Scott Mellon was forced off through injury and was replaced by Jon Wragg.
With five minutes remaining in the half, Salt switched the ball wide for Ricky Greening but his shot hit Gray and flew wide of the goal. Two minutes later Town were denied by a combination of Drennan clearing Gray’s header off the line then Dave Gleeson blocking Salt’s shot on the line and then the referee gave a foul for a push by Salt on Gleeson.
Five minutes into the second half Branagan raced onto Wragg’s free kick but his ball across goal was saved by
Martin.
On the hour mark Main’s big utility man James Radford controlled a weak back pass by Tom Adams and played the ball to Branagan but he was forced to turn inside and his shot on the turn flew wide of the goal.
Salt wasted a great chance to at least force Bailey into a save in the seventy third minute when he fired high over from twenty yards out.
With five minutes remaining in the game Greening beat the Main offside trap and raced in on goal but Bailey saved bravely at the feet of the flying winger.
Branagan could have won the game for Main late on when he connected with Greg Mason’s ball forward but the Main strikers volley went the wrong side of the crossbar in the eighty ninth minute.
In second half injury Paul Lavender set off on a winding run into the Town half beating three players but his shot flew wide of the post.

Main: Jamie Bailey, Paul Lavender, Scott Mellon (Jon Wragg 19), James Ellis, John Drennan, Dave Gleeson (Steve McDonnell 84), Chris Dickman, Greg Mason, James Radford,  Rob Branagan, Adam Shepherd.
