Maltby Main Football Club
Main were looking for a good run in this years FA Cup when they entertained NCEL Divison1 side Rossington Main at Muglet Lane, but the dream was shattered as they went down 3-1 to the new-look Doncaster based side.
Main manager Steve Adams kept his faith in the side that beat Long Eaton United on the opening day of the new season but brought Dave Gleeson, Shawn Edwards, Scott Whittington and Declan Howard onto the bench to make up the six substitutes allowed in FA competitions.
The visitors almost took the lead in the first minute when David Holvey had his header cleared off the line by Simon Megson following Jason Stokes’ corner.
Main were awarded a ninth minute free kick twenty yards from goal - Lee Mellon stepped up but his shot hit the visitors’ defensive wall and was hammered clear by Lee Holmes.
On fifteen minutes Paul Lavender was gifted the ball by Micheal Mcdonald and raced in on goal but his low shot was saved by Rossington ‘keeper Lee Appleby.
Two minutes later Holvey managed to scoop the ball away as Mellon was closing in to head home John Wall’s floated free kick.
Mellon headed just wide in the twenty fifth minute following Wall’s corner with Main enjoying a good bit off pressure but Rossington took the lead on the half hour mark when Lewis Hilton sidefooted in from close range after the ball rebounded off Megson.
The visitors doubled their lead two minutes later and it was Hilton’s second as he sidefooted in after Danny Reilly’s headed clearance fell to his feet.
Main were awarded a penalty in the forty first minute when Lavender was brought down in the area by Danny Lodge. Scott Somerville stepped up but his powerful penalty was saved by the legs of Appleby and bounced clear of danger.
Rossington went three – nil up in the fifty seventh minute when Will Mcghie raced onto Hilton’s through ball and slotted the ball under Bailey and into the Main goal.
A minute later the visitors had the ball in the net again when Sean Nicholls sidefooted in but he was in a offside position.
With fifteen minutes remaining in the match Nathan Fraser fired high over the Main bar after a great run to the edge of the box before Main pulled a consolation goal back in the eightieth minute when Craig Roden smashed home a freekick from twenty yards leaving Appleby rooted to the spot.
