Maltby Main Football Club
Main chalked up their third consecutive victory with a six-one hammering of last season’s premier division champions Winterton Rangers.
Main hit the first of five first half goals as early as the sixth minute when Dave Shepherd shot past Rangers ‘keeper Adam Nicholson from inside the box after Matt Wragg had flicked on a Paul Staniforth long throw.
Moments later Rangers were close to an equaliser when Richard Dane shot just wide from close range from Callum Render’s high cross from the right.
Then Andy Holt headed wide from Render’s corner after Main ‘keeper Jamie Bailey had tipped another Render cross over the bar as the visitors pressed but, in the fourteenth minute, Rob Branagan bagged Main’s second, this season’s top scorer shooting into the bottom corner of Nicholson’s net from twelve yards following Nicky Hancock’s mazy run into the box.
Seven minutes later Matt Wragg made it three-nil, slamming the ball home from ten yards from Simon Hickey’s pass forward.
Bailey a good stop in the twenty fourth minute to deny Holt who had latched on the end of Render’s free kick but, with fourteen minutes of the first half remaining, Main made it four-nil with Matt Wragg shooting past Nicholson after Branagan’s superb ball into the box.
Rangers pulled a goal back in the thirty seventh minute when Matt Plant headed in at the back post from Luke Foulkes’ free kick from the right.
Then, Plant headed wide of the Main goal from another free kick before, in first half injury time, John Beggs capped an amazing first half for Main with an amazing goal when he latched onto Jonathan Wragg’s through ball and fired the ball into the net from twenty yards.
After fifty one minutes, Main substitute Ryan Tate combined with Jon Wragg to set up Branagan, but Nicholson got down well to stop his low shot.
Main’s new defender Matt Griffin got on the end of Shepherd’s cross but his low shot was saved well by underfire ‘keeper Nicholson.
Branagan got his second and Main’s sixth in the sixty first minute when he ran onto Matt Wragg’s through bal, beat the Rangers offside trap and rounded Nicholson before coolly slotting the ball into the net for his 2nd of the match and 10th goal of the season.
Matt Wragg was close to a hat trick when he shot narrowly wide after picking himself up after colliding with Nicholson in the Rangers box.
Main skipper Staniforth, forced a good save with a thirty yard shot as the match came to a close with a another superb performance from Main.
