Main were looking for a change in their fortunes but, despite dominating the first half and leading at the interval it was not meant to be against high flying Winterton Rangers as the match ended amidst some controversy.
Main assistant manager Craig McCormick made three changes dropping himself completely for Mark Coggin. Nicky Darker came in to replace Russ Hobson who dropped to the bench and Danny Mullooly back from injury replaced Jovan Maric on the bench.
The conditions were terrible with a gale force wind blowing from right to left in the first half hindering the visitors as they kicked down the slope.
Main were first to show with Scott Somerville shooting over the bar in the eight minute, his shot somewhat assisted by the strong wind and The Miners took the lead in the tenth minute, Somerville grabbing his third goal in three games latching onto Andy Hirst’s through ball after the rocket heeled midfielder dispossessed Judd Colley and raced forward, beating two more Rovers players.
Main skipper Chris Piperithis went close to giving Main a second when he flicked Darker’s long throw goalwards forcing Philip Jackson to head the ball off the line in the seventeenth minute.
Darker then forced Ben Simpson into a fine save after twenty minutes the visiting ‘keeper tipping his twenty five yard strike over the bar with the ball seemingly destined for the top corner.
Main had the ball in the net a second time when Danny Payne diverted Somerville’s shot into the bottom corner only to see the linesman’s flag up for a debatable offside in the twenty seventh minute.
The visitors finally woke up on the stroke of half time. Mark Whitehouse stepped up and curled his free-kick around the wall, only to be denied by a world class full length save from Olly Schofield.
Maltby were forced into a change at halftime with Danny Payne struggling with a hamstring injury. Hobson came onto replace him.
The conditions worsened for the start of the second half with heavy rain driving down on Muglet Lane. Main set off in the second half has they did the first with Darker going close in the forty ninth minute.
The visitors saw Lee Mohammed shown a straight red for a dangerous challenge on Schofield as he slid out to collect the ball at his feet.
The conditions were so bad that the referee brought the players off until the rain and sleet calmed and the enforced break seemed to benefit Rangers as they pulled level in the seventieth minute. Mark Coggin was unable to clear a Mark Whitehouse corner, heading the ball into the roof of his own net.
McCormick was then forced into making his final two changes with both Paul Staniforth and Liam Kay struggling with knocks, Chris Dickman and Danny Mullooly replacing them.
With fifteen minutes remaining on the watch Darker flashed a twenty-yard thunderbolt wide of the goal before Rangers’ assistant manager was sent from the touchline for constant abusive language towards referee Adam Smith.
Whitehouse scored direct from a corner in the eightieth minute to give the visitors the lead but their third goal was the source of much controversy with Whitehouse side-footing into an empty net. With all the Main players stopped, Mr Smith had blown his whistle having spotted his assistant’s flag raised on the far side. Smith went over to consult his assistant and after a lengthy discussion Smith gave the goal to the sheer disgust of the Main players, staff and supporters.
