Maltby Main Football Club
Main went to league leaders Mickleover on the back of a well earned point away at Hallam on Saturday and started the game the stronger with Matt Wragg, Rob Branagan and Chris Wood involved in some great sixth minute build up play resulting in Wragg firing a shot goalwards that was deflected into Danny Tollerfield’s arms.
Main were unlucky not to go ahead in the thirteenth minute when Wragg chased down a back pass with Jack Coulson, Tollerfield came out to clear the ball but it cannoned off the Main striker and went for a goal kick clipping the post on the way out.
Three minutes later Dave Shepherd raced down the wing and crossed from the left, Matt Wragg volleyed the ball across goal and Joe Carter played the ball back to Tollerfield incensing the Main players who were claiming it was a backpass.
Tollerfield then bowled the ball wide to Ricky Law who beat Simon Hickey for pace but Gary Hibbert was on hand to slide in and put the ball out for a throw in.
Sports took the lead in the nineteenth minute when Law, unmarked at the back post, fired the ball into the top corner. Jamie Bailey got his palms to the ball but was unable to keep the ball out.
In the twenty fifth minute Shepherd looped a corner into the area, Sam Carter headed clear only to Hickey who headed the ball goalwards but Tollerfield caught the ball under his own cross bar.
On the half hour mark Main skipper Paul Staniforth launched a throw in into the area, Lee Mellon headed the ball on to Matt Wragg who managed to flick the ball across the goal to Chris Wood who side footed wide from close range.
Five minutes later Branagan raced onto Wood’s through ball but his shot hit the side netting at the front post.
Main started the second half as strong as they did the first with Matt Wragg heading on Bailey’s long ball.  Coulson looked to have cleared
the danger, heading the ball back to Tollerfield but Wood raced onto the ball and rounded Tollerfield who looked to have brought the Main striker down but the referee gave a corner kick to Main.
On the hour mark Danny Martin set off a great solo run from inside his own half and fired in a powerful shot that was blocked by Danny Reilly.
Seven minutes later Reilly was on hand again to dispossess Karl Ashton who had controlled Gavin Wilson’s long ball forward.
Twenty minutes from time Main were awarded a free kick thirty yards from goal. Lee Mellon stepped up and curled the ball inches wide of the goal with Tollerfield struggling to get to his near post.
Two minutes later Martin set off on another great driving run, beating Mellon, but Reilly was again in to win the ball for Main. Reilly again dispossessed Ashton as the Sports striker raced forward in the seventy fourth minute.
Main pulled level in the eighty fifth minute when Staniforth launched the ball into the Sports penalty area, the ball was headed on by Mellon and volleyed into the middle of the goal by Branagan.
Sports, however, took only forty six seconds to restore their lead. Liam Walsh smashed a free kick into the top corner from thirty yards and Bailey was unable to keep the ball out with his fingertips.
Deep into injury time Staniforth launched another long throw into the area and this time Wilson headed the ball clear, only as far as Hickey but his shot flew wide of the goal.

Main: Jamie Bailey, Jon Wragg, Paul Staniforth, Gary Hibbert, Danny Reilly, Lee Mellon, Rob Branagan, Simon Hickey, Chris Wood (Nicky Hancock 79), Matt Wragg (Greg Mason 68), Dave Shepherd (Danny White 81).
