Maltby Main Football Club
Main began the new year in style with a one-nil win at Nostell MW,completing a league double over the West Yorkshire side.
In the twentieth minute, after a slow start to the game, Welfare’s Craig Stephens took advantage of Main skipper Gary Hibbert’s hesitation on the edge of the box and nipped in to the box, but his shot went wide of the target.
Three minutes later Main took the lead in their first attack of the match. Scott Somerville collected the ball in his own half and raced forward. His cross-field ball found Sean Lee in acres of space on the right and the Main defender’s right foot shot into the bottom corner of the net from twenty yards gave Welfare ‘keeper Sam Dodds no chance.
A minute later Main striker Richard Tracey hit a thirty yard shot wide and, at the other end, Welfare’s Matt Denton had a shot on the turn saved by Main ‘keeper Jamie Bailey.
Tracey again shot wide from the edge of the box and, in the last five minutes of the half, Main top scorer Rob Branagan had two efforts blocked by ‘keeper Dodds as Main finished the half on top.
Three minutes into the second half Lee shot wide from a
similar position as his first half goal.
In the fifty fourth minute, Bailey tipped a thirty yard Stephens free-kick over the bar and, from the resulting corner, Dave Nicholas had a shot blocked on the line.
On the hour Barry Rankin  shot over from the edge of the box as Welfare tried to get back on level terms.
Home ‘keeper Dodds got down well to save Tracey’s low free kick and, in the sixty ninth minute, Branagan headed wide from Simon Hickey’s corner.
With fifteen minutes remaining, Branagan had a header in the net but the flag went up for offside.
Then, Tracey’s fierce shot was blocked following substitute Ryan Tate’s free kick as Main completed the job and took a welcome three points to lift them up to 11th in the table.
