Main went into the local derby with close rivals Parkgate with only one change to the starting line-up which earned a midweek point at home to Selby. Mark Coggin replaced James Mitchell at full back and Liam Kay returned to the bench after a lay-off with injury and it was Main who played with more hunger an passion and deservedly took all three points in an entertaining local derby.
The Steelmen were the first to show when Richard Patterson headed wide from David Radcliffe’s long kick before, in the ninth minute, Steve Ward headed well wide from Steven Nixon’s free kick.
A minute later Chris Dickman fired a shot just over the bar which had Radcliffe worried and Main were twice denied the opening goal. On twelve minutes, Staniforth’s corner was headed off the line then Radcliffe saved Ash Longstaff’s close range header following Luke Fletcher’s cross back into the area.
Main had appeals for a penalty turned down in the eighteenth minute when Danny Mullooley was scythed down in the area by Ben Sargeant but the referee gave a corner.
Staniforth curled in the corner into the area and Nixon was forced to head behind for another, Nicky Darker took the corner and Longstaff was again denied a goal when his header was blocked and skipper Chris Piperithis had his low shot saved. With twenty minutes remaining in the first half Main were awarded a free kick twenty five yards out. Staniforth stepped up but he curled the free kick wide of the post.
On the half hour mark the home side took the lead when Ward deflected Matt Outram’s low free kick past Liam Richardson and into the Main goal.
Five minutes later Richardson pulled off a great save to deny Andy Battersby but the ball dropped to Ryan Johnson, with a open net to shoot into he put the ball over under pressure from Mark Coggin. The goal would not have stood anyway with Battersby being in an offside position.
On the stroke of halftime Ward shot well wide of Richardson’s goal from Patterson’s cross before, at the other end, in first half stoppage time,
Ratcliffe pulled off a superb save to tip Fletcher’s fierce strike from the edge of the area over the cross bar.
Main came out for the second half with an intention of turning the game around and Longstaff went close after only thirtyseven seconds.
In the fiftieth minute Mullooley flashed a shot wide of the goal following Staniforth’s free kick before Ward, for the home side, weaved his way into the Main area but his shot was saved down low by Richardson.
On the hour mark Ward raced into the area but shot well over the bar.
Longstaff went close again in the seventieth minute when he controlled the ball in the area but his shot hit the side-netting following Somerville’s corner.
Main mid fielder Mullooley smashed a volley high into the roof of the goal in the seventy second minute to give Main the equaliser following Dickman’s short corner to Somerville and his cross into the area, the goal delighting the Main bench and supporters.
Main went looking for the winner for the remainder of the game and Dickman almost earned it when his free kick was saved by Ratcliffe in the eighty second minute.
Parkgate were not finished, howvere, and the Steelmen almost snatched the winner when Patterson fired in a free kick but Richardson was not tested saving easily and Main sealed the points when Mullooley fired a side footed volley past Ratcliffe and into the net following Somerville’s short corner to Dickman and his cross into the area.
The Main bench and supporters erupted when the ball hit the back of the net as Main took the derby day bragging rights, at least until the return encounter at Muglet lane on Boxing Day.
