Maltby Main Football Club
After the long five-week lay-off, Main were back in action in the local derby at neighbours Parkgate but fared worse than their opponents from the enforced break and were beaten 3-1.
The home side had an early chance in the fifth minute when Ryan Johnson set up Nathan Swindells at the edge of the box but his shot went over the Main bar.
Main went forward on a couple of occasions but the ‘Gate defence were on hand to clear the danger away from goal.
In the nineteenth minute ‘Gate took the lead when Swindells swept the ball past Main ‘keeper Jamie Bailey from inside the box following Johnson’s square pass across the box.
Then, Bailey was on hand to save James Mitchell’s back post header from Alex Barnes corner.
On twenty three minutes, Will Senior headed wide from another Barnes corner but, a minute later, Main drew level when they were awarded a penalty when Paul Allen pushed Adam Shepherd in the box. From the spot, assistant player manager Lee Mellon smashed the ball past Dave Ratcliffe in the ‘Gate goal.
Parkgate then had a period of pressure on the Main goal.
First Andy Gascoigne had a thirty yard effort brilliantly tipped over by Bailey and, from the corner, Mitchell’s header was saved.
Then, Senior shot just wide and had low shot saved before, with five minutes of the half remaining, Mellon had a header from twelve yards saved.
Two minutes later Greg Mason had the ball in the ‘Gate net but was flagged offside and Rob Branagan beat the offside trap but his shot went over.
Just after the break, Gascoigne had a deflected shot saved and Mellon had two free kicks charged down by the ‘Gate defence.
In the fifty seventh minute’Gate re-took the lead when Senior forced the ball over the line from close range following Swindells’ cross from the right.
Bailey made another good save to deny Johnson in the sixty sixth minute and, nine minutes from the end, ‘Gate sealed the points when Leon Wainman scored from inside the box following Johnson’s cross from the right.
