Maltby Main Football Club
Main gained a vaulable point with a 2-2 draw at high flying Scarborough Athletic after coming back from 2-0 down.
Manager Steve Adams rang the changes after last week’s defeat against Winterton. Rob Branagan was welcomed back from injury and Greg Mason joined him up front with James Ellis returning in defence and Scott Whittington in midfield. New signing Joe Wilson figured on the bench.
Athletic set the early pace with Craig Hogg having a shot blocked and Rob Ellis forcing a good save from Jamie Bailey in the Main goal with a twentyfive yard effort.
Mason sliced a shot wide for Main from Paul Lavender’s throw into the box and Lee Mellon’s low free kick was easily saved by Athletic ‘keeper Arran Reid.
The home side then had three chances in as many minutes. Rich Medcalf headed wide from Joel Hartley’s cross, Hogg saw his header saved from Danny Moore’s right wing cross and Ellis shot wide on 16 minutes.
Then, Reid punched clear Mellon’s header from Whittington’s corner from the left before, at the other end, Moore was well off target with a long range effort and Mark Griffin had a shot deflected wide.
Reid did well to deny Mellon, pushing his low shot out for a corner and, from the flag kick, Neil Longhurst sliced wide.
In the last ten minutes of the half, Athletic piled the the pressure, roared on by the large crowd, and the opening goal came in first half stoppage time when a Longhurst pass on the halfway line was intercepted by Ellis, his pass found Medcalf wide on the left and his low cross was swept into the net by Hogg.
Two minutes after the break, Hartley shot just over and Bailey had tip an inswinging cross from Hartley over the bar.
Main hit back in the fifty fifth minute with Longhurst shooting wide with a long range effort and defender Jon Wragg had a header from a Whittington corner saved by Reid.
On the hour mark, Athletic made it two when Hogg shot past Bailey from close range after the Main ‘keeper had punched out Paddy Miller’s free kick. Six minutes later, Mellon headed wide from a good position after getting on the end of Longhurst’s cross from the left.
In the seventy fifth minute, Bailey kept Main in the game with two top class saves, denying Medcalf and tipping Hogg’s goalbound heder over the bar.
With eleven minutes remaining Mason pulled a goal back for Main by shooting past Reid from inside the box following Branagan’s ball forward and, a minute later, it was all square with Mason smashing the ball in at the back post from Lavender’s cross from the left to mark a remarkable comeback.
In the eighty seventh minute, Bailey made another great stop to deny Hogg  after Medcalf headed down in the box before, in the last minute, Branagan was set clear but his run in on goal was halted by the assistant flag’s for a very close looking offside descison.
