Maltby Main Football Club
Main’s new league campaign got off to a losing start at Selby Town.
Manager Steve Adams gave starts to new signings Tom Jones and to midfielder Andy Wood, returning for a second spell with Main. Striker Matt Wragg, returning from a season long injury, was on the bench along with another new signing Ben Redfearn.
Town started the more lively with defender Rob Eeles heading wide from Paul Ashton’s corner from the right and striker Adam Russell also heading wide from Liam Davis’ corner from the left. Jammal Shahin then shot wide, all inside the first ten minutes.
Main hit back with a couple of chances. Ryan Smyth shot wide from the edge of the box and Chris Dickman shot the same way from outside the box.
In the 23rd minute,Town took the lead when they were awarded a penalty after defender Jon Wragg handled Jack Debnam’s long throw into the box and Town skipper Brenton Leister sent Main ‘keeper Jamie Bailey the wrong way from the spot.
Eleven minutes before the break, Bailey got down well to cut out a cross into the box from Ashton before Main went close on 40 minutes when Wood and Scott Whittington set up Simon Hickey and his shot on target from 25 yards produced a good save from Paul Fraser in the Town goal.
Two minutes later, Town increased their lead when Debnam cut inside from the left and slotted the ball past the advancing Bailey from just inside the box.
In first half injury time Russell shot over after a goalmouth scramble in the Main box.
Three minutes into the second half Town went close to a third goal when Shahin’s twenty yard free kick hit the underside of the bar and was cleared away by the Main defence.
Bailey made a good stop to deny Debnam in the 51st minute before, three minutes later, Main pulled a goal back when Chris Dickman smashed the ball into the back of the net from the penalty spot after Ashton had fouled Jones in the box.
On the hour Main defender Danny Reilly got in a vital block to deny Russell.
With twenty minutes left, Main made a couple of substitutions, bringing on Matt Wragg and Paul Lavender but, despite some neat football from Main in an improved second half performance, Town held on to take all three points before Lavender headed over from a Scott Mellon free kick.
