Maltby Main Football Club
Main went down to a three-one defeat to a Shirebrook side that was desperate for three points to avoid the drop into Division One and it wasn’t long before Town went in search of the first goal.
As early as the second minute, Marc Sherlock headed wide from Nathan Watson’s corner from the left and, a minute later, Darren Bettinson had a low shot from twenty yards saved by Main ‘keeper Jamie Bailey.
Main midfielder Lee Mellon tried his luck with a thirty yard free kick that brought a good save from Town ‘keeper Joel Armstrong.
Town then piled on the pressure, creating numerous chances, the best from Sherlock, forcing Bailey to push a goal-bound shot around the post.
Kristian Watson linked up well with Nathan Watson but his shot was weak and easily dealt with by Bailey.
Then, defender Phil Austin shot into the side netting from a tight angle on the left.
After thirty-one minutes the pressure paid off when Nathan Watson out-jumped the Main defence to head in from Austin’s cross into the box.
The lead only lasted three minutes when Main striker Rob Branagan ran onto John Beggs’ defence splitting through ball and shot past the advancing Armstrong from twenty five yards.
In the last minute of the first half N.Watson had a shot saved following a short corner as honours tremained even at the break.
In the fifty eighth minute Branagan headed inches over the bar from a great position at the back post following a Ryan Tate cross into the box from the left.
Seven minutes later Town sub Adam Kirkwood screwed a shot wide from inside the box and at the other end Beggs shot over from the left.
Then, Beggs hit a free kick from thirty yards over the home bar.
With twenty minutes remaining Town retook the lead when Bettinson raced onto a long ball forward and just beat Bailey to the ball and slotted it into the net.
In the last minute Kirkwood sealed the points that will ensure that the Nottinghamshire club will play in the Premier Division next season when he lobbed Bailey from fifteen yards from another long ball into the box.
The result, however, dashed any hopes Main had of finishing in the top half of the table.
