Maltby Main Football Club
An understrength Main side were knocked out of the NCEL League Cup, their 2nd cup exit in the space of 4 days, with a 3-0 defeat at 1st Division Shirebrook Town.
Things got off to a bad start when Town striker Carl Haslam got on the end of Danny McLane's long pass on the right and cut into the box and slotted the ball past the advancing Main 'keeper Jamie Bailey to give the home side a 7th minute lead.
In the 16th minute striker Kieran Watson wasted  a good chance by shooting straight at Bailey after being set up by defender Luke Thomas.
Four minutes later, Main were close to an equaliser when Rob Branagan's back post header from Scott Mellon's in-swinging free kick from the right, crashed back off the crossbar.
Then, Bailey easily saved Jordan Johnson's header and Kieran Watson shot well wide from long range.
For the remainder of the half, Main had chances to get back on equal terms. Ben Langford shot wide from 25 yards, then Scott Whittington shot just wide from Simon Hickey's ball into the box. Ryan Smyth brought a good save from Town 'keeper Jason White with a fierce 20 yard strike following Whittington's cross from the right.
Two minutes before the break, Branagan set up Langford but his shot from 20 yards went high over the bar.
After a couple of early 2nd half efforts, Town increased their lead in the 60th minute when Kieran Watson fired in from 12 yards at the back post from Haslam's pinpoint cross from the left.
Main midfielder Hickey was off target twice, shooting straight at White in the box and heading over fom Whittington's right wing corner.
After 65 minutes, Haslam shot over for Town and, 8 minutes later, Main substitute Mark Clare headed just over after Smyth flicked on Dave Gleeson's free kick.
Bailey produced a brilliant save in the 76th  minute to deny Town skipper Steve McGurk.
Three minutes from the end, Clare had the ball in the Town net but the flag went up for offside before, in the last minute, Kieran Watson and McGurk combined to set up substitute David Middleton and his shot from 10 yards flew high into the net past the diving Bailey.
