Maltby Main Football Club
Main were looking to advance to the next round of the Senior Cup when they travelled to Division 1 side Staveley Miners Welfare and Main were hoping for a better result than the last time the two teams met: a 5-1 home defeat in the League Cup last month.
Maltby set off well with Lee Mellon’s deflected shot being tipped around the post by Tom Hewitt in the third minute and took the lead a minute later when Dave Shepherd raced down the wing and played the ball inside to Greg Mason, who then squared the ball to Adam Shepherd who sidefooted into the bottom corner of the Staveley goal.
The home side were back on level terms in the fifth minute when Scott Ellis sent Scott Bates clear through. Bates looked to be marginally offside but he was allowed to play on, and  slotted the ball past Jamie Bailey in the Main goal.
The home side went in front in 3 minutes later when Bailey’s punch dropped to the feet of Andy Fox, who chipped in from the edge of the area following Jamie Smith’s deep cross from the right.
Neil Longhurst went close to putting Main level after Mason flicked Bailey’s long kick into the striker’s feet but his shot went wide of the goal in the twenty-third minute.
Staveley went further ahead in the thirty second minute, when Smith sidefooted in from close range after Bailey had spilled Bates’s powerful strike from range but Main pulled a goal back in the forty ninth minute when Mason turned and curled the ball into the top corner
following Simon Hickey’s deep cross. Two minutes later Fox made it 4-2 when his shot was deflected in by the legs of Bailey following Bates’s square ball and Bates was unlucky not to have made it 5-2 when he controlled Smith’s cross and fired the ball at the post with Bailey beaten.
Hewitt pulled off a great point blank save to deny Mason in the fifty ninth minute following Dave Shepherd’s run and cross from the wing and Longhurst’s square ball.
With fifteen minutes remaining in the game Scott Whittington controlled Hewitt’s weak clearence and raced in on goal: he squared the ball to Adam Shepherd who sliced the ball wide of the goal under pressure from Danny Robinson.
Whittington was inches away from pulling Main within a goal of the home side in the eighty fifth minute when his deep cross almost flew in at the far post before Main youngster Ryan Smyth made it 4-3 with a wonderful strike into the top corner following Hickey’s ball wide and Whittington’s cross.

Main: Jamie Bailey, Tom Salt, James Ellis, John Drennan, Dave Gleeson, Lee Mellon (Scott Whittington h/t), Adam Shepherd, Simon Hickey, Neil Longhurst, Greg Mason (Ryan Smyth 75), Dave Shepherd (Paul Lavender 75).
